I love love love coconut oil. Coconut oil has grown in popularity the past few years, especially outside the kitchen. There are so many ways to use coconut oil and most importantly it’s affordable.

My favorite brand is Nutiva. It’s organic virgin coconut oil and it has a fresh and authentic coconut flavor and smell. But it’s all about preference. My second favorite oil is spectrum coconut oil, it tastes less “coconutty”.

10 ways to use coconut oil

1. Oil Pulling

I can’t remember how I found out about oil pulling, but oil pulling has been a part of my morning regimen on and off for years. I oil pull to get whiter teeth and overall oral health. It also helped with my congestion and I’m pretty sure other things that I’m unaware of because it draws out toxins out of your body. I’m not sure of the science behind oil pulling but I can assure you it works, just give it a week. Here’s a link to an article on oil pulling and how to do it.

2. Treating Scars

I suffer from eczema and acne and I get a lot of scarring. Slather coconut oil all over your body right out the shower. Sounds like a crazy oily mess but it’s all about preference here haha. My skin is a dry sponge so in other words, do what works for you. #doyouboo!

Plus: If I go out, I spritz a light perfume (my favorite: Pistachio Brulee from UO) and the mixture smells amazingly fresh and just “no words can explain how good it smells”, not to mention my skin looks glowing and moisturized. Definitely a summer beauty staple.

3. Smoothies

I love to add a tablespoon of coconut oil in my smoothies. Coconut oil is a healthy saturated fat that supports your organs and gives your brain a boost. Plus I love the taste.

4. Cradle Cap

I recently added this once I saw my baby with a patchy scalp. I immediately turned to google and found the remedy; coconut oil! I was so stoked to add another reason to use my obsession. After you wash your little one’s hair, take a couple drops of oil and massage his/her scalp. Then take a brush or comb to spread the oil. The day after, her cradle cap was gone. Now that I think about it, I might just use coconut oil for her moisturizer, forget the fancy baby stuff.

5. Makeup Remover

Coconut oil as a makeup remover is great because it’s light and the makeup slides off easy. wash your face afterward.

7. Hair Gel

Having 4c natural hair is sometimes difficult. Trying to find a gel that will tame my curls and not break off my hair at the same time. Coconut oil is a great way to lay down any hair style. On damp hair apply coconut oil to edges and brush into whatever style. Tie a scarf over style and let it sit for 20 mins or longer. Your style will last all day.

8. Moisturizer

Coconut oil is a great moisturizer. After your shower, apply coconut oil. Coconut oil will hydrate and soothes skin after shaving.

9. Sunscreen

Coconut oil has an SPF of 6 which is not enough to protect your skin but when mixed with zinc oxide, and an essential oil you can easily make your own sunscreen.

10. Stretch Marks

Forget all the fancy stretch mark products being sold, plain coconut oil will do the trick.
